Bi-Tapp News: What is happening in the world of Bi-Tapp

Every day is spring at Bi-Tapp

Spring is symbolic of abundance, growth and renewal. Many of us look forward to this season of new beginnings as the earth springs to life once again which tends to inspire us to take action on projects or set new goals. It is our great privilege at Bi-Tapp to witness the positive growth of so many people year-round. Once someone understands the basics of nervous system regulation that the tappers can provide in real time, relief and hope abound.

Real Life Stories

Overcoming Test Anxiety

Imagine graduating from college and now you need to pass the licensing exam to be able to practice in your field of choice. A gentleman who sought out Bi-Tapp stated he had struggled with some test anxiety in high school and college but graduated.  The next step was to pass the certifying examination. He studied and studied and studied and failed the test. He was discouraged and disappointed but his place of employment where he was to begin practicing was willing to hold his job for him, confident he would pass the second time. He didn’t. Now, he was beginning to vacillate between panic and despair. He wasn’t able practice in his field, he had a family to provide for, he had student debt and mounting thoughts of discouragement and hopelessness.

This story ends well. He had heard about the tappers and was willing to reach out for help. What he didn’t need was more tips on how to study better. What he needed was basic knowledge of how to regulate his nervous system “while” he was taking the test. The result? He passed. The missing piece was Bi-Tapp.

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor states “until we push the pause button and take a moment to calm down and feel safe again, we will not be able to think clearly. This is why anyone who is freaking out with test anxiety tends to perform poorly, regardless of how well prepared they are. When our limbic anxiety circuit is triggered, we are neuroanatomically cut off from accessing our higher cortical thinking centers, which is where learned knowledge is stored.” (Whole Brain Living, 2021, p.14).

Feeling Confident and Calm

We recently met a lady who had experienced an injury that required surgery. She needed post-surgery rehabilitation. When the bandages were taken off, she felt immediately overwhelmed and anxious. She reports being unable to do the exercises her occupational therapist was asking her to complete due to the anxiety she was experiencing. The occupational therapist recognized the importance of helping this lady feel calmer “during” the rehabilitation appointment and asked her to wear the tappers as they did the exercises. This lady reported she felt much calmer once she was wearing the tappers. The bilateral tapping worked in the background, helping calm her nervous system automatically so she could complete the exercises less heightened and overwhelmed.

Because of the relief she felt during the appointment, she bought her own set of tappers to help her manage her anxiety in her daily life. Once she experienced the difference between a regulated nervous system and a dysregulated nervous system, she wanted to experience regulation more often. This is true for each of us.

Feeling Safe

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. We work with domestic violence and sexual assault treatment programs to provide this resource to victims of trauma. The tappers are used to help trauma survivors shift from a panic, triggered state to a calmer state. The tappers are also used to help survivors of trauma get better sleep and to concentrate better at work and school giving them help in the very moment they need it to regulate their nervous system in a simple way. Press the button on one of the tappers and the bilateral tapping begins. No one has to know you are using the tappers for regulation because you can slip the tappers in your pockets and the tapping is quiet enough that you aren’t drawing unwanted attention to yourself.

We received a phone call from a worried mom because her daughter had been assaulted in college. Her daughter was obviously struggling to sleep and she didn’t feel safe. This campus had tappers available for students to check out similar to checking out a library book. The result? She not only used the tappers to help her get better sleep, she also had a resource she could take with her and use whenever she needed to during the day. The reality is, you don’t know when you are going to get triggered. The tappers give you a resource that you can confidently turn to for support in real-time.

The tappers do not take the place of therapy, but they are a simple to use resource to regulate your nervous system anytime you need it. It is not enough to teach someone coping skills because when someone is heightened or triggered, they typically don’t remember the skills they have been taught. This is where the tappers come in; simply press the button on one of the tappers to begin the bilateral tapping. Within a few minutes, the person feels calmer and safer and “then”, it is easier to remember other coping skills they have been taught. The tappers are a stand alone resource or can be used with other coping skills such as focused breathing or listening to calming music.

Nervous System Regulation

At the core of creating the positive changes you are wanting to create whether in springtime or anytime of the year, understanding the importance of a regulated nervous system is the missing piece to sustaining the changes you are wanting to make. Bilateral tapping inhibits the amygdala, which is the part of that brain that becomes overactive when you are overwhelmed, anxious, triggered or in pain. Having a resource that does the tapping in the background, allows you to have a real-time resource that automatically helps you feel calmer and more focused. The tappers are used by all ages.

As we continue to work with people everyday and witness the progress they are experiencing, we are grateful for the difference Bi-Tapp is making in their life. Each of us, no matter our age or circumstance, benefits from a regulated nervous system. The tappers make this possible in a super simple way. All you have to do is hold or wear the tappers. Bi-Tapp provides a sense of calm and control, helping you live a more peaceful and productive life. This is why every day feels like spring at Bi-Tapp.
